Can You Crack It? That Forgotten Dutch Creation That Forged the Contemporary Globe

There are many contenders to claim the title of “world’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The printing press. The combustion motor.

According to a recent publication, though, that honor should go to the mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.

“Before mechanised cutting, building a modest trading ship required approximately 10 sawyers laboring for 90 days,” notes the author. “Using wind-powered lumber mills, the same quantity of cut lumber might be manufactured within a week.”

Thanks to this speedy automated saw, which turned logs into boards using almost no manual labor, Dutch builders were able to build vessels more quickly compared to any other nation, which unleashed one hundred years of Dutch naval, financial as well as artistic dominance in the continent and the world.

The First True Manufacturing Machine

The inventor's lumber mill, contends Dávila, represented “mankind’s first authentic factory apparatus.” A wind turbine rotated a wheel. One component transformed its rotary motion into up-and-down action for the saw. Another component transformed the spinning movement into a lateral motion feeding the timber to the blade. A geared mechanism moved the wood ahead one precise increment per cycle.

“Every component seemed simple on its own. The Dutchman’s genius was to combine them so the machine acted within a precisely synchronized sequence, cutting with each downward stroke while moving with each return stroke. It was an astonishingly clever application of basic parts.”

Construct a machine that turns circular movement into vertical motion. You have these items exclusively: A spinning wheel. Two pins. Two rods. A “sleeve”, which is a tube or housing through which a single the rods can slide perfectly. (Consider that it is possible to put things on a base, so that the components do not collapse.)
