India's capital Wakes Up to Hazardous Pollution Following Festival of Lights

As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with exposed to severely hazardous air that fell into the "severe" category.

Alarming Pollution Levels

Several parts of Delhi registered an AQI above 500, which translates to ten times the healthy threshold established by the WHO.

Particular areas, levels of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of eighteen hundred, equating to fifteen to twenty times above safe standards.

Firecracker Prohibition and New Developments

Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the hazardous haze that covers the capital as the cold season approaches.

Yet in recent months, the current local government petitioned the supreme court to propose a relaxation of the restrictions.

The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – previously questioned by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a compromise between "cultural practices and public health".

Legal Decision and Reality

Despite concerns of environmental and health advocates, the court approved the appeal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during designated periods throughout the celebrations.

During the celebrations, there was considerable violation of the designated hours across the capital, with little regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Several monitoring devices throughout the city showed contamination peaking around late evening to some of the worst measurements recorded during Diwali in at least recent memory.

International Consequences

The proliferation of firecrackers during Diwali also sparked a dispute with neighbouring the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming deteriorating air quality in the city of Lahore on contaminants traveling from across the border following the events.

Persistent Pollution Crisis

Alarmingly severe readings of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have continued as a serious challenge for over a decade and a half, with the situation showing no improvement.

Around the festival period, the levels of dangerous particulate matter in the environment has been observed to shoot up to significantly exceeding the peak levels ever measured in China's capital, which was previously regarded as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Diverse Contamination Sources

The situation in the capital is resulting from a combination of various sources including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, building projects, waste incineration and pollutants from crop residue ignition in adjacent areas of Punjab and Haryana.

In these regions, agricultural workers illegally set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, producing dangerous pollution that remains stagnant over the city as winter air descends.

Public Health and Economic Consequences

The economic and health impact on the approximately 33 million residents calling home the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to various investigations.

These hazardous conditions causes increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can result in oncological diseases.

The pollution is calculated to be accounting for 10,000 untimely mortalities each year in the city.
